New projects in la Plagne

Did you know? La Plagne is embarking on a very ambitious project: LIVE3000. The aim of this project is to improve access to the glacier from Plagne Bellecôte. This initial project has led to other redevelopments in the ski area. The gondola lift was built in the 70s, and since then summer skiing has become obsolete, and ground movements are causing damage in the short to medium term.

Replacement of the glacier gondolas

The first stage of this huge project is the construction of a 10-seater gondola from the Roche de Mio to the glacier. The red gondola lifts leading up to the glacier bowed out on Saturday 29 April 2023, when the resort closed. After 45 years in operation, the gondolas will be replaced.

The history of the gondolas on the glacier was marked in particular by the fire in August 2005. Early in the morning, a shepherd spotted smoke coming from the gondola arrival station at an altitude of 3050m. Emergency services were airlifted to the glacier, accompanied by two helicopter bombers, to bring the flames under control. The result: the station was totally destroyed, the power cable snapped, one cabin burnt down and two others fell to the ground.
The teams worked tirelessly to rebuild the glacier gondola arrival station, and it was operational for the winter of 2005/2006.

But since then, other problems have surfaced, not least because of global warming. When the gondola lift was built in the 1970s, the project was designed for both winter and summer skiing. However, with global warming, the glacier has become impassable in summer. Added to this is the melting of the permafrost (the first layer of frozen ground in the mountains), which is causing ground movement. In the short to medium term, this could cause damage to the chairlifts on the glacier and the traverse.

La Plagne's history is therefore coming to an end, but a new one is opening up with the LIVE3000 project. The aim of this project is to facilitate access to the glacier for skiers and non-skiers alike. SAP wants to offer a unique experience at an altitude of over 3000m. Find out more

A new station on the Bellecôte snow front?

Following the redevelopment of the glacier and the creation of LIVE3000, SAP wants to exploit the ski area. The new project has evolved considerably in recent months. Initially, SAP wanted to build a new gondola lift to the Roche de Mio with a stop at the Col de Forcle. Initially, the plan was to build a new departure station on the Bellecôte snow front. The Roche de Mio gondola would have had to depart from a station located between the current station and the Chalet des Colosses. To facilitate access, a track would have been created to avoid skiers crossing each other and to protect against possible accidents.

However, this project no longer seems to be on the agenda. For some weeks now, SAP has been talking about building this new gondola from the departure point of the one already installed on the Bellecôte snow front. To simplify access, there will be 2 entrances: one for Belle Plagne and one for the Col de Forcle - Roche de Mio.

SAP's aim with this new project is to relieve congestion on the Bellecôte snow front, which is already very busy with skiers using the Colosses, Blanchets and Arpette chairlifts or the Roche de Mio gondola.

Intermediate station at the Col de Forcle

At the Col de Forcle, SAP has chosen a new project to diversify the resort's activities, particularly during the summer season. A leisure Centre will soon be built, with an island at the side offering sun loungers and snacks, and a section with changing rooms and showers. Initially, only the water ski lift is planned. If the project develops as SAP hopes, other activities such as wakeboarding, paddle boarding and kayaking will be offered. However, swimming will be prohibited, and a neoprene suit will be compulsory for access to the water activities.
